Sikes Adobe
Sikes Adobe surprisingly is part of the San Dieguito watershed. Water from Volcan Mountain and Lake Sutherland runs to lake hodges and before the water reaches lake hodges, it runs below sikes adobe. This site has much history. My class and I took a trip back in time and learned the era's common etiquette. We walked around the adobe with books on our head. Not only did we learn manners but we also learned how to make butter and saw where cold food use to be stored; and it was NOT in a refrigerator. After learning about how to make edible substances we went to view the garden. The garden in place was not the original, mostly because no one knew where the garden was originally, and because the site was a victim of a fire. The garden grew broccoli, carrots, cilantro, lettuce and onions. We contributed to helping the garden grow by planting potatoes. The rangers were also very kind to share medicinal herbs with us! Lastly, my group got to experience the wildlife around the house. The short hike was relaxing and informative. The ranger shared with us the history of the Battle of San Pasqual. Overall, I learned a whole lot from this experience and got to talk to some very knowledgeable and friendly people. Below you can see the photos I took during my trip.
